Schwartz's Deli - Montreal

Schwartz's Deli, Montreal, QC, Canada
While touring the streets on our second day in Montreal, we bumped into a local that gave us a few key food suggestions for our short trip. One of his suggestions, was a visit to the apparently world-famous Shwartz's Deli. Having now eaten there, I can't overstate how good it is and how it is definitely worth your time if your in town. Maybe I can help put it in perspective by posing a question: Ever heard of Katz's deli in NYC? Well, despite the calls of blasphemy by some, I can say that this is its tastier cousin.

The Grub:

The offerings at Schwartz's Deli aren't that wide or that varied, and honestly that's a good thing. It means that the focus is exactly where it should be, on preparing quality meats to go on some amazingly slammin' sandwiches. At the "to go" stand up store - they have 3 sandwich options: the marvelous Smoked Meat, the Turkey and the Salami sandwich. You can also get fries on the side, which I highly suggest, as well as some pickled peppers out of the cooler case to round out the meal. The sit-down Schwartz's adds a few more items to the menu - a handful of different steak cuts for reasonable prices. While I can't speak toward the steak, I can say that the Smoked Meat sandwich was possibly the best version of this type of sandwich I have ever eaten. It is basically the same as getting a pastrami at Katz's but somehow just a little bit better. I'm sure that statement may be met with some skepticism, and at the end of the day it is only my opinion, but you should do yourself a favor and at least put it to the test.

My Order:

Smoked Meat Sandwich
Fries
Cherry Coke

The Digs:

You certainly can't miss Schwartz's from the street - their orange and white pin-striped awnings and signs serving as a beacon to all sandwich-seekers. The insides are as old-school as possible in the best way. No nonsense, no frills, no fuss. The day we went, the sit-down side had a line out the door so we skipped it and went for the take out spot next door. If you are just looking to eat and move on, I highly suggest this option as it will get you your food the fastest way possible.

The Nitty Gritty:

Great sandwiches at an old school establishment. Gives me a warm feeling just thinking about it.
