ShangHai Restaurant - Fort Lee

Shanghai Restaurant - Fort Lee, NJ
I must have passed this restaurant at least two dozen times before my girlfriend's reminders sparked a trip one hungry evening. Admittedly we should have stopped sooner. ShangHai Restaurant is one of those great little hidden gems - nestled on the quiet portion of an otherwise busy street in Fort Lee, NJ.  Their menu offers a number of fantastic, simple, authentic Chinese dishes that will keep me coming back a few times a month into the foreseeable future.

The Grub:

You already know that they serve Chinese food, but let me give you a few suggestions for your inaugural trip. First, I would definitely start with their Scallion Pancakes and an order, or perhaps two orders of their soup dumplings. Both are some of the best I have ever had, and I'm counting a number of really good places in Flushing and Manhattan's Chinatown. After that, as an entree I would definitely suggest the Braised Pork Belly or Pan Fried Beef Udon which again represent the pinnacle of what Chinese food can, and should be ideally. If you think you have a big appetite, bring some veggies into the game and order the Sauteed Pea Shoot Leaves, you wont regret it.

My Order:

Scallion Pancake
Soup Dumplings or Pan Fried Dumplings (depending on my mood)
Braised Pork Belly
Sauteed Pea Shoot Leaves

The Digs:

ShangHai Restaurant has a very small, all-be-it efficient space located off the main drag of Main St. in Fort Lee. Their dining room has at most 10-15 tables, except in summer when they also have some outdoor seating available. The service here is always extremely prompt, helpful and kind - typically a very short wait time for dishes. The location offers a very limited parking lot in the rear accessible from a driveway to the immediate left of the building - fitting maybe five to six cars at most. Luckily, street parking is available nearby on Main St. and in the surrounding neighborhood if necessary. ShangHai is also extremely popular for takeout in the area so keep that in mind if you are local. Also worth noting is their customer loyalty punch-card, five visits gets you a free order of soup dumplings!

The Nitty Gritty:

If you like Chinese food, why haven't you been to Shanghai yet?
